Spelling Homework Sheet
Each week, along with your spelling list, you will be told which items on the following list you are to complete. I hope that this provides a little variety to your nightly homework.
All work is still to be done in the spelling notebook, in pencil, and in cursive or print.
1. ABC Order (Put in alphabetical order).
2. Write sentences.
3. Choose 5 words and write the characteristics that help define that word.
Strategies for Improving Your Spelling4. Write words 4 times each.
5. Choose 1 word from your list and write a story.
6. Choose 1 word from your list and write an advertisement to sell that word or what that word represents.
7. Choose 1 word from your list and write a poem about it or use the word in the poem.
8. Choose 1 word from your list and design a postcard.
9. Create a comic strip that uses some of your spelling words in the conversations between the characters.
10. Create a word find puzzle using your words.
11. Create a crossword puzzle using half of your list.
12. Choose the 4 longest words on your list, rearrange the letters in the words to make new words. (You should have 1 list per word).
13. Create a collage of one word you choose from your list. Find and cut out the same word from magazines, newspapers, etc.
14. Sort your words into groups or categories-give each group a title and tell why you put all those words under that title.
15. Choose 1 word from your list and use it to design a bumper sticker.
16. Choose 3 words from your list. Write a riddle/joke using each word. You should have 3 riddles-each word is used in only one riddle, you don’t have to use all 3 words in one riddle.
17. Choose 1 word from your list and write a radio script that centers around that word. (Written like a play)
18. Choose 1 word from your list and create a web. Use the word you chose as the center of the web.
19. Choose 1 word from your list and create a recipe for making something-doesn’t have to be something you can eat.
20. Choose 1 or more words and use them on a T-shirt design.
21. Choose 1 or more words and use them on a travel poster.
22. Choose 1 word from your list and use it to design a pattern.
23. Choose 1 word from your list and use to write a song or a rap.
24. Choose several of your words and use them to design a bulletin board.
25. Choose 3 words from your list. Use each word in a separate word problem. Show how to solve the problem.
1. Write out your words, skipping lines, and then underline all of the letters you know you hear when you say the words out loud.
2. Identify all of the chunks you see in each word. Each word should have several chunks next to it.
Example: candy: can, and, andy
3. Use the words identified by your teacher to create webs that show the relationship of your word to other words you already know.

4. Write out your words, skipping lines, and then use a red pen to divide them into syllables.
5. Create a list of rhyming words for your spelling list. Each spelling word should have as many rhyming words as you can think of next to it. Remember, rhyming words don’t have to be spelled the same as the original word.
6. Choose one of your spelling words and write a story using that word. See how many times you can use the word in the story. Each time you use your spelling word, underline it using a red pen. Make sure you have spelled the word correctly each time as well.
7. Choose the 4 longest words on your list, rearrange the letters in the words to make new words, and record your new words. Remember, you can only use a letter once if it’s only in the word once. Make one list per word.
8. Sort your words into categories or groups. These groups can be based on things like number of syllables, letter patterns (all have ‘cl’), number of vowels, or similar characteristics (all machines, all verbs). Give each group a title. Words can be in more than one category. Be creative and create your own categories.
9. Choose several words from your list and use them to write a song or a rap.
10. Choose 3 words from your list. Write a riddle or a joke using each word. You should have 3 riddles--each word is used in only one riddle.
11. Choose 5 words from your list and expand them as much as you can by adding prefixex and/or suffixes.
Example: sign: design redesign redesigned redesigning designed designed designate designated
12. Choose 5 words from your list and make a list of words that you know are spelled using similar letter groups.
Example: chase: chair chuck chew chime
